Aloha, I wanted to give you some very important information to help you have a healthy puppy. I want to give you a list of important items that are extremely dangerous and could potentially cause death to your dog.
Treats made of Jerky- AVOID ALL TREATS MADE OF JERKY MADE IN USA OR CHINA AT THIS TIME!!! Unfortunately, too many dogs have gotten sick and/or died suddenly after eating Jerky treats made in China that are commonly sold at Costco, Petco and regular places that we trust. The FDA has put a warning on all jerky treats even made in USA until they can get to the cause of this. Also feeding your Royal Hawaiian Standard Poodle Puppy treats, make sure they are for puppies and do not feed him/her adult treats.
Alcohol can result in coma and death.
Avocado – all products of the avocado plant are poisonous to dogs including avocado fruit and guacamole dip made from it. It will destroy the heart muscle and other tissue including the lungs. Signs of poisoning include difficulty breating, irregular heartbeat, swollen abdomen, fluid build up around the heart, seizures, coma and death.
Baby Food – can contain onion powder – this could be toxic to your dog… If you feed your dog baby food it could also result in nutritional deficiencies if fed in larger amounts.. Baby food is for babies only!!
Bones from fish and cooked bones can obstruct the digestive system
Bread dough can result in the dog’s belly becoming bloated and then disorientation and vomitting may occur. Because the yeast hasn’t risen yet, it may expand in your dog’s belly and could possibly get stuck in their intestines. This can be toxic!
Cat Food is for cats only!!! It is generally too high in protein and fats for your dog and will make him sick!
Chocolate, coffee, tea and caffeinated drinks are bad for your dog. – contains a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diruetic. After a dog eats a large quantity of chocolate, your dog may appear fine, but in some cases death occurred within 24 hours. Symptoms inclue staggering, labored breathing, vomitting, diarrhea, tremors, fever, seizures, abdominal pain, heart rate increase, coma or death.
Citrus oil extracts result in vomitting… Not Good!!!
Grapes or Raisins can make your dog ill. They contain unknown toxins. Symptoms vomitting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and lethargy
Liver - large amounts of cooked liver cause Vitamin A toxicity, which can impact the muscles and bones. Toxic to dogs!
Macadamia Nuts as well as other nuts can be a concern for your dog. They have a high phosphorus level and it can lead to bladder stones. A dog can develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles and weakness or paralysis of it’s hind quarters. The affected dogs may be unable to rise and appear distresssed, usually they are panting. Some dogs may have swollen limbs and show pain when they move their limbs.
Milk & Dairy Food can cause diarrhea in dogs due to the lactase enzyme.
Mushrooms are toxic and can be fatal to your dog with certain mushroom species. Symptoms include abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, convulsions, vomitting, diarrhea, coma, death.
Onions and garlic – contain a toxic ingredient – thiosulphate. Onions are more dangerous. Dogs affected by onion toxicity can develop anaemia where the red blood cells burst while circulating in the dogs body. Symptoms include hemolytic anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomitting, diarrhea, discolored urine. The poisoning usually occus a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onions are dangerous including dehydrated onions. Remember that left over pizza sometimes has onions.. so use care.. Garlic also contains thiosulphate and it is less toxic than onions, however it is still dangerous to your pet.
Raw Eggs contain an enzyme called avidin which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain salmonella.
Raw Fish can result in a thiamine (a B Vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. This is more common if you feed your dog raw fish regularly.
Sugarless candy & Sugarless gum contains an ingredient that can be deadly to your dog: Xylitol… This is the artifical sweetner found in sugarless candy and sugarless gum. It causes the dogs blood sugar to rapidly drop. Symptoms include fatigue, staggering, irregular heartbeat, irregular breathing, seizures, com and death.
Table Scraps in large amounts could be toxic to your dog. People food is not nutritionally balanced for dogs. Fat should be trimmed from meat and bones should not be fed to your dog. Cooked meat and cooked fats are carcinogenic to dogs.
There are also other non food items that must be kept out of the reach of dogs.
Antifreeze and chemical spills can be toxic to your dog. Antifreeze has a sweet smell and taste but if your dog consumes any amount of antifreeze, rush him to the vet IMMEDIATELY! Check your garage and driveway for chemical spills and clean them up before your pet has a chance to smell or ingest it! Symptoms include vomitting, diarrhea, confusion, dilated eyes, depression, increased thirst, kidney failure, seizures, irregular heartbeat, irregular breathing, coma and death…
Household Everyday Cleaning Product- Clorox, Bleaches, Toilet Cleaners, Dishwashing Liquids, Detergents, Polishes, Mouthwashes, Toothpastes, Soaps, Shampoos, Hair Dyes, Shavers, Comet, etc.
Household & Garden Plants – most plants in large amounts can be potentially toxic. The common flowers are dangerous – amaryllis, aconite, azalea, belladonna, buckeye, foxgloves, hyacinth, hydrangea, ivy, all species of lily, night shade, rhododendron, tulip and yew. Symptoms of ingestion include dialated eyes, vomitting/diarrhea, irritation around mouth, swelling of the mouth and throat, excessive drooling, excessive thirst, irregular heartbeat, irregular breathing, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and death.
Ibuprofen – like antifreeze may smell sweet. A dog will eat things when they find them on the floor Some dogs may even try to chew through the bottle to eat all of the pills. Ibuprofen is definitely toxic to dogs. It causes ulceration and perforates the stomach lining and will decrease the blood flow to the kidneys.. Toxic!!!
Medication – sometimes we may drop a pill on the floor accidentally, be cautious of your medications as you dispense them. Also, never give your dog people medication without consulting your veterinarian. Symptoms of incorrect medication given to dogs can be dilated eyes, vomitting, diarrhea, confusion, irregular breathing, irregular heartbeat, seizures, coma and death!
Pointsettias – the bright red, pink, or white large leafed Christmas plant contains a milky, thick, irritant sap.
Symptoms of ingestion include vomitting, anorexia and depression. Contact your vet!
