Red Standard Poodle History
Edited by Kelly Lynn Smith
It took many years to achieve the quality and conformation that we see in the red standard poodles of today.
The concept of developing a red standard poodle was first conceived by Ilse Konig of the Shangri-La Kennel when she returned from Germany in 1980 and admired a red miniature poodle at a dog show.
With the assistance of the Palamares Kennel in Oregon; together they embarked upon an experimental breeding by mating a small English apricot bitch (provided by Shangri-la) to an oversize red dog at Palamares. [In Europe, it is acceptable to mate separate size classifications as long as the difference is under 10 centimeters.]
Quoting from Ilse Konig
“I kept the first litter—4 red babies. The color was stunning and I was dancing from joy!
The problem came later on. The heads were Standard Poodles, the legs short like Miniature Poodles.
While they were cute, they were not in temperament as I knew the Standard Poodle.
They all were smaller than a Standard and they were called a "Caniche",
(the in-between size of Mini and Standard Poodle)."
As no red gene pool was available; the largest puppy from each litter was bred, thus gradually increasing the size with each successive generation. "It took several years of mating and keeping red poodle puppies to come up to the standard of the BIG poodle. Today they all fit the bill. There are several Champions now and the size is up to 26 inches. It was a real tough job with lots of frustrations and disappointments- BUT- I had my red Standard Poodle, as you can see in my pictures."
"The turn in the temperament finally came with Coquetel Apollo--who really should be mentioned in all of this. He was the one that brought the good disposition into the red line.
Unfortunately, Apollo was shot by a New Jersey breeder while out on a lease because he was chasing his chickens.
I believe that the breeders of the Reds have accomplished a terrific feat.
To even get one red into the ring would have been impossible in the eighties.
While it was a frustrating road for all of us, its amazing to even get that far.” Says Ilse Konig

Dog Born Without Eyes Is Victim of China’s Red Poodle Fad
Unscrupulous breeders overbreed and inbreed to keep up with market demand for specialty dog.
By Jocelyn Heaney
This sad, sad story reminds me of the tragic consequences of animals being seen as fashionable fads rather than living creatures warranting our love and attention.
According to China’s Tapei Times, the Kaohisung Concern for Stray Animals Association recently received a call from a man who needed help. His poodle had given birth to a litter.
One of the puppies--a coveted “red” poodle--was born with no eyes. The man couldn’t care for the handicapped pup, yet didn’t want breeders to get their hands on the dog. He feared they would simply keep using her for breeding and more animals would be born blind or have other birth defects.
Red poodles have become a hot item in the Chinese pet market, here in USA and worldwide, and rushed breeding has resulted in more dogs being born with birth defects simply to keep up with the high demand.
Here's What The Breeder Mentors have to say........
PLEASE help stop back yard breeders and puppy mills by choosing your puppy from breeders who invest in genetic testing and who are actively involved with breed clubs and in their local communities. EDUCATE yourself before you select your new family member. Don't buy impulsively! Be informed and plan to be a responsible pet owner.

The situation with the Red Standard Poodle in North America has been dismal at best this past decade. There have been very few breeders who have gotten into this colour with dedication to improve the Poodles of colour or the breed as a whole. It took a sad turn in 2006, when it happened to be "The Year of the Dog" in Asia, and red happened to be the "lucky" colour. Many unscrupulous people saw an opportunity to jump on the band wagon, as breeders were being offered upwards of $10,000 for a single red Standard Poodle puppy, and upwards of $100,000 for a pregnant red Standard Poodle bitch. Many began purchasing their breeding foundations from North American breeders who were equally unscrupulous and unethical. Some of the breeders selling breeding dogs to people looking for a way to make a quick buck on a trendy colour, were kennels who have never health tested a single dog in their own breeding program, who bred their females beginning at nine months of age, who bred their females back to back to back to back heats, never taking into consideration the heartache and misery that might befall the families purchasing their dogs, or the health implications to the bitch they were breeding, or the effect that their way of doing things might have on the reds in particular, or the breed as a whole.
As a fellow red breeder. I have had the sad task of being the recipient of far too many phone calls from heart broken puppy buyers who had the misfortune of purchasing a dog from one of these breeders- people whose puppy had to be euthanised at fourteen months of age because of a genetic disorder or was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at a year of age, or had an internal deformity which made it impossible for this young dog to carry on a normal life.
In North America it is sad but true- colour sells. There have been numerous people get involved in reds, browns or parti colours simply because these colours sell well. They are trendy and desirable.
Not much thought has gone into improving what has been ailing the breed for many years.
In this continent, whether or not you are a member of the CKC, Canadian Kennel Club or The AKC, American Kennel Club, one can breed any two dogs of one breed together regardless of colour, and regardless of whether or not there has been any health or genetic testing done on the two dogs being put together to create a litter of puppies. One can register those puppies, so long as they are from two purebred parents.
The kennel clubs in this continent provide no regulations on breed specific testing that MUST be done on parents before they are allowed to pro-create. If you are not a member of the kennel club, you can still breed, and you can still register your litters- you just pay twice as much to do so.
In Canada and the United States, we are seeing far too many Standard Poodles who are sorely lacking in chest and dentition. There are other issues in the reds in particular- poor tail sets, lacking in under jaw, fine skeletons..
The reds in North America tend to lean toward a high COI (co-efficiency of inbreeding) because of some pretty serious inbreeding and line breeding that has taken place over the twenty or so years they have existed. This plays a role in why the structure is such an issue and why the health is suffering. The importance of a low COI can be read about at www.canine-genetics.com . They discuss there how a COI of less than 10% generally gives a dog four extra years of life as opposed to a higher COI..
When researching pedigrees of perspective mates for our dogs, in many cases we see the same dogs coming up in the backgrounds of many of them, usually within the first three generations of the pedigree and sometimes see the same dogs popping up in a pedigree as many as five times!!! I am sure most rational people can see how this can cause problems.
Our breeding program, we are looking for better structure, more diversity, and lower COI's.. We continue to research in the hope of bringing more to our program in the future.
When researching to buy a puppy, do your homework. Some people have a tendency to convolute anything when it comes to their fellow breeders. Do not be fooled by rhetoric and unsubstantiated claims. Research yourself.

If you cannot be a responsible dog owner, please wait until you can be.
Do NOT breed out of greed, emotion or ego or for any reason other than to improve the breed (i.e., to make the puppies better than their parents).
Most purebred dogs, and of course, all mixed-breed dogs, should not be bred.
The majority of dogs have some defect (in structure, temperament, health) that should not be perpetuated.
Dogs used for breeding should be free of all defects - that's the definition of quality. ("Papers" mean nothing; They are simply, and nothing more than, birth certificates.
Plenty of dogs have "papers," but are so poorly bred they actually look like mutts.
And no human should ever breed any dog without veterinary/laboratory testing and pedigree research to be sure that dog is free of (and not a carrier of) genetic defects.
FAILURE TO TEST/SEARCH FOR INHERITABLE HEALTH PROBLEMS IS THE NUMBER ONE MARK OF A BACKYARD BREEDER. IT IS ALSO THE MOST DAMAGING TO CANINES, AND THE MOST HEARTBREAKING TO PUPPY-BUYERS, WHO END UP WITH YET ANOTHER GENERATION OF POOR-QUALITY DOGS WHO TOO OFTEN DEVELOP EXPENSIVE, EARLY HEALTH PROBLEMS AND OFTEN DIE PREMATURELY.
We have a severe pet-overpopulation crisis in the US; We slaughter thousands of beautiful, vital, healthy dogs every single day. (Twenty-five percent of shelter dogs are purebred.)
Every puppy produced by a backyard breeder and placed in a home takes the place of one killed in a shelter because no one adopted it. And every puppy produced by a backyard breeder can make more puppies, and those puppies can make more puppies and so on.
And of course, backyard breeders, through their encouragement and the dispersal of misinformation, have a knack for turning uneducated buyers into yet more backyard breeders.
